David Rummel is an award-winning video journalist who has worked as a producer and senior producer on a variety of news programs at ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and most recently, The New York Times. He joined the staff of the University of British Columbia Graduate School of Journalism in 2012 as an Assistant Professor, where he teaches International Reporting, Advanced Video reporting and Integrated Journalism.
As Senior Producer for News and Documentary at The New York Times, he helped create the current online video unit at the Times in 2006. He was responsible for supervising and editing the work of 14 video journalists in New York, as well as freelance producers overseas. The final project he worked on for the Times, a 3-part series about the late NHL player Derek Boogard, “Punched Out: The Life and Death of a Hockey Enforcer,” was nominated for an Emmy Award in the digital media category.
During the course of his career he has won multiple Emmys, Columbia-Dupont silver batons, the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, George Foster Peabody Awards, George Polk Awards, I.R.E. Investigative Reporter and Editors awards, and Overseas Press Club awards.
