Safia Swimelar is associate professor of political science and coordinator of the International Studies program at Elon University in North Carolina where she teaches courses in human rights, European politics, international law, international relations, and peace/conflict studies. She also teaches a study abroad course in London on multiculturalism and immigrant communities. Safia completed her graduate degrees at the University of Texas-Austin and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina studying post-war human rights. Her current research interests are: human rights and film, nationalism in Europe, and Balkan, European, and global LGBT rights. She has published articles in International Studies Perspectives, International Journal of Human Rights, Human Rights Quarterly, Nationalism and Ethnic Politics, and Ethnopolitics.
